FCC Proposes $5 Million Fine For Election Robo-Calls

Right-wing activists Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman have been under investigation due to alleged robo-calls made before the 2020 election. Their goal was to discourage voters, specially the ones that where going to vote by mail. On Tuesday, the Federal Communications Commission suggested a $5 million fine against the duo. The pair is facing criminal charges of voter suppression on top of a federal lawsuit in New York, which accuses them of making 85,000 robocalls targeting Black Americans that intended to vote by mail. The FCC argues that Wohl and Burkman made over a thousand pre-recorded calls to cellphone without authorization, which constitutes a violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Said messages said that mail-in voters were going to be added to a database used by the police to track old warrants and be shared with credit card companies to collect debts.
